Madame Gasket ran the Chop Shop, where scrap metal is converted into upgrades in the movie Robots. She was Ratchet's mother, Rodney's arch-nemesis, and Bigweld's arch-rival. She was voiced by Jim Broadbent.

Physical Appearance

Madame Gasket is a fearsome-looking robot with yellow eyes, red and orange volcano-like crown, and a metal unibrow.

She has a claw for her right hand and a sharp, pincher-like weapon for her left.

She travels on three large wheels that are hidden under the rest of her body.

The top of her head appears to be some kind of motor with sawblades in it, which is always spewing out smoke. Because of her unnatural appearance, many other robots mistake Madame Gasket for a man.

Ratchet is embarrassed about her looks.

She has a set of wires with a harness which she uses to get around the Chop Shop.

Personality

Madame Gasket is the mastermind behind the plan to kill off all robots deemed "Outmodes" and turn them into upgrades.

She is truly relentless, quick-tempered, baleful, wicked, psychotic, abrasive, sadistic, power-hungry, witty, stingy, ungenerous, self-centered, persuasive, conceited, devious, and manipulative.

She has Ratchet execute her plan by tempting him with the thought of more money and less rusty robots. It is unknown what she has against outmodes as she could easily be considered one herself due to her appearance.

Madame Gasket is also the head of an underground factory called the Chop Shop, which melts down discarded scrap metal to turn into upgrades.

She has no problem with killing off other robots, as she tried to have Bigweld dumped into the Chop Shop's furnace, and she ordered her army of mutant robots to turn Rodney and the other outmodes into scrap metal.

Although she is sinister and malevolent, Madame Gasket does have a soft motherly side, which can be seen whenever Ratchet is around.

She genuinely cares for him as she gave him a framed picture of herself captioned and praised him when he agreed to help carry out her plan.

Ratchet later presented her with an army of shiny, upgraded sweepers to use for killing outmodes, much to her delight.

Trivia

  • Although it is unknown why or how she became evil in the first place and hates the outmodes when she is an outmode, she probably does it out of greed to gain profit from the sold ingots. She is one of the few characters to die in the movie.
  • She is described by Chris Wedge as "a constantly disappointed, horror of a mother".
  • Despite being a female, she was voiced by the British male actor Jim Broadbent.
  • Though Ratchet drove the plot of the film, Gasket is the one who was behind the plot as she wanted Ratchet to take over Robot City in the first place. It's also very easy to confuse Ratchet for being the main antagonist instead of Gasket, as the latter had very little screen time compared to the former. Further adding to the confusion is that Madame Gasket is absent in the PlayStation/GameCube tie-in game, with Ratchet being the main antagonist instead of her. She does, however, appear in the Game Boy Advance version as the final boss.
  • Gasket is the first antagonist of a Blue Sky Studios film who is a parent. Gasket is also the first female antagonist in a Blue Sky Studios film.
  • Swoosie Kurtz, Adrienne Barbeau, Jennifer Saunders and Jane Kaczmarek were all considered for the role of Gasket, but it was ultimately decided that Gasket would mistakenly be considered a man. So, Jim Broadbent was cast as the voice of Gasket.
  • Gasket is so far the only villainous animated character to be voiced by Jim Broadbent.
  • Gasket is the 3rd villain along with Ratchet being the 2nd to come from Blue Sky Studios as Robots was their 2nd movie.
  • Her relationship with Ratchet is similar to the Fairy Godmother's relationship with Prince Charming in Shrek 2, as the only difference is that unlike them, both the mom and son are the main antagonists Also, just like them, the mother dies, but the son survives.
  • Their relationship is similar to Randall Boggs' relationship with Henry J Waternoose in Monsters Inc., Also one of the main antagonists ended up in another world, but one of them got arrested for their crimes.
  • She is the Robots counterpart of Karen from SpongeBob.
